While there are plenty of good recruiters out there, it's easy to see why trust in the industry has taken a knock. In this blog, we explore some common frustrations and why it might be time for a different approach.
If you've hired through recruitment agencies before, chances are you've got a story to tell.

Maybe you were promised a shortlist within a week that never arrived. Maybe you spent hours reading CVs that had nothing to do with the role. Or maybe the recruiter who couldn't stop calling suddenly disappeared once the candidate accepted the job.

Unfortunately, these aren't one-off experiences. We've spoken to enough employers over the years to know the same frustrations come up time and time again. And while there are plenty of good recruiters out there, it's easy to see why trust in the industry has taken a knock.

Recruiters who disappear after the placements

The phone barely stops ringing while you're looking to hire. Then the offer's accepted, the invoice is paid and... nothing.
If the new starter has questions, if things don't quite go to plan or if you simply want to check in with your recruiter, they're suddenly much harder to get hold of.
Recruitment shouldn't end when someone starts work.

The best recruiters stay involved because they genuinely care whether the placement works for both sides. After all, if someone leaves after a few weeks, nobody wins.

Endless CVs aren't helping anyone

We've never understood the idea that more CVs equals a better service.

Most hiring managers don't have time to read through twenty or thirty applications, especially when half of them clearly aren't right.

It's not about volume, it's about understanding what the business actually needs and only introducing candidates who are worth interviewing.

A recruiter who's listened properly shouldn't need to flood your inbox.

Poor communication and promises that don't match reality

This is probably the biggest complaint we hear.

Most businesses understand that not every role can be filled quickly, and they don't mind hearing that a search is proving more difficult than expected. What frustrates them is being told everything's on track, only to hear nothing for days.

A quick update goes a long way. Even if there isn't much to report, keeping clients informed is far better than leaving them wondering what's happening behind the scenes. Being honest builds trust, while overpromising usually has the opposite effect.

So why has trust with recruiters been lost?

Part of the problem is that recruitment has become very transactional, with some agencies focused on filling vacancies as quickly as possible before moving on to the next one.

But recruitment isn't just another sales process. When businesses work with an agency, they're trusting them with one of the most important parts of their company: the people they hire. That means communication, honesty and consistency are just as important as finding the right candidate.

What should businesses expect from a recruiter?

Working with a recruiter shouldn't leave you doing more work than you started with. You should expect someone who takes the time to understand your business, keeps you updated throughout the hiring process and only sends candidates who genuinely fit the role.

If the market is tough, you should expect an honest conversation about it rather than unrealistic promises. And once someone starts, the relationship shouldn't end there. A good recruiter will check in, make sure everything is going smoothly and be there if any issues come up.

Recruitment should make life easier

At People4U, we don't think any of this is groundbreaking. It's simply how recruitment should work.

We'd rather send three strong candidates than twenty average ones, have honest conversations instead of making promises we can't keep, and build long-term relationships instead of disappearing once the paperwork's signed.

When recruitment is done properly, it saves businesses time, reduces the stress of hiring and helps teams grow with confidence. That's what every business should expect from its recruitment partner.
