A straight-talking look at the UK hiring market and what employers should do now.
Hiring has slowed. That does not mean hiring has become easy.
The UK jobs market is weaker than it was. Vacancies are down, unemployment has edged up and many employers are being more cautious with permanent hires.
ONS data for January to March 2026 put UK unemployment at 5.0%, up on the year. Vacancies have also continued their long downward trend, with ONS reporting 711,000 vacancies in January to March 2026 (Office for National Statistics)
KPMG and REC’s latest hiring data also shows employers leaning more towards temporary workers, while permanent hiring remains under pressure (The Guardian)
So, does that mean employers can relax?
No.
It means employers need to hire properly.
More available candidates does not automatically mean better candidates. A bigger pile of CVs still needs sorting, screening, speaking to and matching properly. That is where many hiring processes fall over.
This month’s reality: candidates are available, but the right ones still need finding
When the market weakens, some employers assume recruitment gets simple.
Post the job. Wait for applications. Pick from the pile.
Nice idea. Usually wrong.
A softer market can bring more applications, but not always more suitable people. You may see more candidates who are applying widely, changing direction, testing the market, or not fully right for the role.
That means the real work is still in the detail:
Who can actually do the job?
Who wants this role, not just any role?
Who fits the team, the pace, and the culture?
Who is serious enough to move, interview, and start?
That is what proper recruitment should cover.
Not CV throwing. Not keyword matching. Not ghosting. Not hoping for the best.
Employers are cautious. Candidates notice.
With costs up and confidence mixed, many businesses are taking longer to make hiring decisions.
That is understandable.
But slow processes still cost you good people.
Even in a weaker market, strong candidates don't sit around forever. They still have choices. They still judge your business by how you communicate. They still lose interest when there are delays, vague feedback or a messy process.
A good hiring process does not need to be complicated.
It needs to be clear
Tell candidates what the role is.
Tell them what the process looks like.
Move quickly when someone is right.
Give feedback when someone is not.
Do not drag a three-stage process into six weeks unless there is a very good reason.
Simple.
What employers should do now
1. Be clear before you go to market
Know what you actually need before the job goes live.
Not a wish list of 42 skills. Not a recycled job description from 2019. Not “let’s see who’s out there”.
Be clear on the must-haves, the nice-to-haves, the salary, the working pattern, the deal-breakers, and the person who will fit.
The better the brief, the better the shortlist.
2. Do not underpay and expect miracles
Pay pressure may have eased in some areas, but candidates still know their worth.
If the salary is below market, say so and be realistic about what that means. You may need to compromise on experience, speed, flexibility, or training.
There is nothing wrong with having a budget.
There is something wrong with pretending it will buy a unicorn.
3. Move when the right person appears
Good candidates are still good candidates.
When someone fits the role, the team, and the budget, do not let the process drift. Book the interview. Give feedback. Make the offer.
Delay is not due diligence. Sometimes it is just delay.
4. Screen properly, not lazily
A CV only tells part of the story.
You need to understand motivation, communication, expectations, salary, availability, work history, and whether the person is genuinely interested.
That is why we speak to candidates properly before they reach your desk.
Less noise. Better shortlist. Fewer wasted interviews.
